Volunteer: Raymond Wildlife Area Trail Maintenance Project

Join us for a rewarding morning of giving back to nature at our upcoming trail maintenance project!

Date: Saturday, May 16th
Time: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Location: Raymond Wildlife Area (10 Buffalo Range Rd, Flagstaff AZ 86004)

We’re looking for a small handful of volunteers to help with trail improvements on the Yeager Trail at RWA. Tasks will include removing weeds and spreading gravel to help keep the trail safe and accessible for everyone. After the work is done, feel free to pack a lunch and relax at the bison ranch. While bison aren’t always visible from headquarters, there’s always a chance you might spot them! Please wear closed-toe shoes, comfortable clothing for variable weather, and bring snacks, a lunch, and water. Please note that the road to Raymond Wildlife Area is unpaved. This is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, learn about local conservation efforts, and connect with others in the community.

Volunteer: Exclosures & Fencing

This opportunity is supported by Friends of Northern Arizona Forests. Please connect with the group for more details and to volunteer.

RIPARIAN FENCE EXCLOSURES

These fences surround sensitive areas including springs, riparian areas and meadows to keep elk, deer, livestock and motorized vehicles out, allowing natural vegetation to flourish. The fences must be eight feet high to be effective against wildlife. Fences designed just to keep out motorized vehicles are typically a log-worm design and can be very attractive. FoNAF builds and maintains these types of fences on both districts.

PRONGHORN FRIENDLY FENCES

Many right-of-way and pasture fences were built using three, four or even five strands of barbed wire. These present a challenge to pronghorn antelope that do not jump over fences but scoot under them. The Flagstaff Ranger District in a joint effort with Arizona Game and Fish Department convert these fences to be what is termed "pronghorn friendly.” That involves replacing the bottom strand of barbed wire with smooth wire, placing it at least eighteen inches above the ground. FoNAF is assisting in this effort.

Volunteer: EARTH MONTH Ashurst Lake Fishing Line Clean-up

In celebration of Earth Month and APS’s 140th anniversary, join us for an Ashurst Lake cleanup on Wednesday, April 29, from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM. We will gather at the parking lot to clear fishing line and litter. Volunteers will be walking beach areas and hiking trails to help protect local wildlife.

What to bring:

Tools, bags and gloves will be available; bring your own work gloves if you have them. Wear proper attire for being outdoors and in the sun, i.e. hat and sunscreen. Some water and snacks will be provided, please bring lunch or additional food you may want. Minor children must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian throughout the project.

Questions? Contact volunteer@azgfd.gov or 602-526-2004.

Ashurst Lake Parking Lot:

Forest Service Rd 82E, Flagstaff, AZ 86001

From Flagstaff , drive south about 19 miles on Lake Mary Road (Forest Highway 3). Turn left (east) onto Forest Road 82E and continue for approximately 4 to 5 miles. Follow the signs for Ashurst Lake, where you will find the lake and campgrounds.

Why?

Improperly disposed fishing line can be consumed by, or entangle, many animals including mammals and migratory birds. Regular cleanups can prevent ospreys, bald eagles, waterfowl, and pets from encountering dangerous and often lethal entanglement. After needing to rescue an eagle nestling last year, which required months of rehabilitation prior to release back to the wild, APS has volunteered to work on coordinating a fishing line cleanup event at the various locations throughtout the state in honor of their 140th birthday!
