Volunteer: Hat Tank Fence Project

We are hosting a multi-day volunteer project on April 9–13 and April 23–27. Feel free to sign up for one or multiple days! When you respond, please note what day/s you plan to attend. Volunteers will help install approximately 2,000 feet of combined Pipe Rail, Smooth Wire, and Cable Wire fencing to partially exclude livestock from accessing Hat Tank and the Spring, while still allowing access for wildlife. A flood gate will also be installed as part of this effort. This project will help protect sensitive water resources and improve habitat conditions while maintaining wildlife access.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: The Tank is located approximately 1.5 hours from Flagstaff in a very remote location on the Kaibab National Forest. There is no cell phone reception at the project site and very limited cell phone reception at the staging site. A 4x4 vehicle with high clearance will be required to get to the site. We will meet at the staging location at 8:30am each morning and work a FULL 6-8 hours.

Staging Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/WRM9AoWHgZuP9tKWA

Downloadable map and directions will be provided.

This is outdoor, hands-on work that may involve lifting, digging, carrying materials, and working on uneven terrain. Volunteers should come prepared for variable weather conditions. Please wear long pants, long sleeves, and closed-toe shoes. Bring your own snacks, water, and lunch for the day. Camping is an option if working multiple days in a row but you will be on your own for gear, food, water, etc. Eye protection and gloves will be provided if you do not have your own.

We appreciate your willingness to support this important conservation effort and look forward to working together at Hat Tank!

For questions, please call or email Brandon Foley: 928-214-1250, bfoley@azgfd.gov

Volunteer: Exclosures & Fencing

RIPARIAN FENCE EXCLOSURES

These fences surround sensitive areas including springs, riparian areas and meadows to keep elk, deer, livestock and motorized vehicles out, allowing natural vegetation to flourish. The fences must be eight feet high to be effective against wildlife. Fences designed just to keep out motorized vehicles are typically a log-worm design and can be very attractive. FoNAF builds and maintains these types of fences on both districts.

PRONGHORN FRIENDLY FENCES

Many right-of-way and pasture fences were built using three, four or even five strands of barbed wire. These present a challenge to pronghorn antelope that do not jump over fences but scoot under them. The Flagstaff Ranger District in a joint effort with Arizona Game and Fish Department convert these fences to be what is termed "pronghorn friendly.” That involves replacing the bottom strand of barbed wire with smooth wire, placing it at least eighteen inches above the ground. FoNAF is assisting in this effort.
