Pronghorn Fence Modification Project
Join us in making a difference for pronghorn! We are modifying up to 3 miles of fence to improve wildlife movement and enhance fawning habitat.
Project Details
- What: Raise the bottom wire of existing fences to 18–20 inches to allow pronghorn safe passage.
- Where: Unit 8, Chino Valley Ranger District, ~4 miles east of the Drake Cement Plant.

Directions to Project Area
From Flagstaff:
- West on I-40 to Hwy 89.
- South on Hwy 89 for 16 miles to Drake Road.
- East on Drake Road for 6.5 miles to junction of Drake Road & Forest Road 182.
- South on FR 182 for 1.1 miles to FR 9711K.
- Veer left on 9711K and go 0.5 miles to Schwanbeck Tank.
From Prescott:
- North on Hwy 89 to Drake Road.
- East on Drake Road for 6.5 miles to junction of Drake Road & FR 182.
- South on FR 182 for 1.1 miles to FR 9711K.
- Veer left on FR 9711K and go 0.5 miles to Schwanbeck Tank.
What to Bring
- Long-sleeved shirts & long pants
- Sturdy shoes
- Sunglasses or eye protection
- Work gloves & pliers (limited supply available)
- Food, water, and personal items
Why This Project Matters
The fence we’ll modify is part of a key seasonal movement corridor for pronghorn. By raising the bottom wire to 18–20 inches, we’ll help pronghorn cross safely and support the health of the landscape and wildlife populations.
