AZ Antelope Foundation: Las Cienegas Fence Modifications

Description

Project Location: Work will be  on Las Cienegas National Conservation Area. Fence modification will mostly be completed along Curly Horse Road, a county maintained road, to assist with unencumbered Pronghorn movement.

Project Begins: Saturday, October 3, 2026 with camp setup at the Rose Tree Ranch Rock House.  Camp setup will be on October 2nd, with project work beginning at 0800 on October 3rd.   This is a one-day project.  If you arrive after 8:00 AM someone in camp will direct you to the project worksite Saturday October 3rd.

Project Activity: On October 3rd,work will focus on rebuilding 1.24 miles of existing range fence by removing t-post clips and fence stays, restretching existing 4-strand fence as needed and replace stays and clips.

Pronghorn Benefits: Fence modifications will be completed along county road right-of-way where Pronghorn movement will be enhanced and provide safe movement across county road.

What to Bring: Work gloves (The AAF will have a limited supply), snacks, water, personal gear. It is recommended you bring a shade canopy as there are no trees at the campsite.

Meals: Please provide your own lunches to eat in the field on the 2 workdays. The AAF will be providing dinners on both Friday and Saturday nights and continental breakfasts with coffee and juice on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Directions to Camp:

   Travel 20 miles south of Tucson on I-10; turn south on Highway 83 and travel 25 miles to the town of Sonoita intersection.

   From this point turn east on Highway 82 and travel approximately 5 miles to the Upper Elgin/Canelo paved road, milepost 40.8.

   Turn south on Upper Elgin/Canelo road and follow AAF signs from that point.

   Camp will be located 3.4 miles south located on the east side of the roadway at the historic Rose Tree corrals and stone bunkhouse immediately adjacent to the roadway.
