The Arizona Game and Fish Department's Native Trout and Chub program is stocking 3,000 Gila Trout, from Mora National Fish Hatchery, into KP Creek on October 27th, beginning at 8:30am. Fish will be put into 5-gallon buckets with water and oxygen, then strapped to frame packs and backpacked by staff and volunteers approximately 4 miles (one way) up the creek to the stocking location. Buckets and frame packs will be provided.
Volunteers will need to bring their own water, food, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, etc. Volunteers will want to wear shoes and clothes appropriate for hiking. Light weight, loose fitting pants, and either hiking boots or tennis shoes are the best options. Denim pants are not recommended, as they restrict movement, and absorb too much moisture. Volunteers may want to bring a small backpack or small cooler to strap to the top of their buckets (straps will be provided). Please be aware that this will be HARD WORK! Packs will weigh 40-50lbs, or more depending on the personal gear you bring. We'll be meeting at
KP Cienega Campground the morning of October 27th, and get started at 8:30am. We will likely finish up around 4 or 5pm.
To avoid having a long drive the morning of, volunteers may want to camp at KP Cienega Campground the night before (which is what we will be doing), or find nearby lodging. For those of you who choose to camp out with us, please keep in mind that it will be COLD at night, and be sure to keep an eye on the forecast to ensure that you are prepared.
Let me know if you have any questions, and please forward this opportunity to anyone who might be interested.
